Traffic calming measures called for Kildare estate following 'near miss'

Cllr Peter Melrose (SD) raised concerns regarding Moyglare Village, Maynooth
The Municipal District Engineer for Clane-Maynooth is to meet with a local councillor to identify traffic safety issues in Moyglare Village, Maynooth, Co Kildare.
The move follows a motion tabled by Social Democrats councillor, Peter Melrose, who called for traffic calming measures in Moyglare Village after reports from a constituent of a traffic “near miss” in the estate.
Cllr Melrose raised his motion at a meeting of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District on Friday, June 6 2025.
In his motion, Cllr Melrose raised concerns regarding emergency vehicles accessing Moyglare Village, citing Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 in relation to emergency vehicle access and pedestrian and driver safety.
Speaking after the MD meeting, Cllr Melrose said: “A constituent got in touch with me about a very near miss between a car and a bike and the reason why the near miss occurred was due to parking on both sides of the road as you come into Moyglare Village.
“Once I was there I took some photos and some videos and the resident was explaining that first of all, the bin lorry doesn't come down there anymore, they park up at the top and bring the bins up because they can't actually get through. And if the bin lorry can't get through then emergency services wouldn't be able to get through.
“While I was there more people came and parked on the other side of the road, who were not residents because they got out of their cars and promptly left the estate. There's an issue there with the university that needs to be addressed as well.”
Cllr Melrose is to meet with the Area Engineer on-site to assess the situation. While he is not certain what measures can be taken, he said, ultimately “something has to be done.”
He said: “We'll have to do something where you can't park on that side of the road, whether that's double yellow lines - and I know that's very contentious – but something has to be done for the benefit of the people who live there.”
Cllr Melrose said he will also liaise with Maynooth University, as there appears to be an issue with either students or staff members parking in Moyglare Village and leaving their cars parked there for the day, often causing an obstruction.
He concluded: “Moyglare Village is one of our older estates, and the residents are that little bit older, so we want to ensure the safety of residents.
“I'll meet the engineer on-site and see what actually can be done, first and foremost that emergency vehicles can access the area and that everyone can drive around safely, and that we don't have an accident.”
A report issued by Kildare County Council confirmed: “The Municipal District Engineer will meet with Councillor Melrose at this location to identify the issues and possible solutions.”
