An intimate immersive experience is taking place in the hidden spaces of The Moat Theatre — Shakespeare’s Hamlet intersects with the fabric of the building, the history of the Moat Club and its members and the echoes of many rehearsals past.

As they mark their 70th anniversary, follow the trail of generations of actors from the Club and hear their memories of how the building brought them together.

In the aftermath of his father’s death, Hamlet must face the devastating grief he feels, sharpened by the rage he feels towards his uncle for trying to position himself as a new father figure.

Play is a piece about grief and loss — of your father… or of your friends. It is about the importance of shared identity and a place like the Moat Club and in a community. Though rife with betrayal and revenge, the father-son relationship at the core of this strand of Hamlet is as recognisable now as it was in 1600.

Play is returning after its sold-out run in Culture Night 2023 and following the success of This House is Elsinore at Culture Night 2022.

It is presented as part of Heritage Week 2024 and supported by Creative Ireland and the Kildare Arts Service.

Patrons will be moving through the building throughout the performance including up and down stairs — unfortunately no universally accessible alternative is available.

Some seating is available at times during the performance, which lasts 75 minutes. Tickets are on sale from July 1 and cost €20/ concessions €18. The staging of Play will take place on Tuesday July 20 at 7pm and 9pm, Wednesday 21 at 7pm and 9pm, Thursday 22 at 7pm and 9pm, and Friday 23 at 6pm, 8pm and 10pm.
