Kildare motorists have been given potentially life-saving advice about what to do if your vehicle ignites while driving.

Vehicle fires while on the move are not a regular occurrence but you may have passed a car in flames on the motorway in the past or seen the burn marks left behind on the hard shoulder.

Dublin Fire Brigade said the safety of the occupants is paramount if such a fire occurs.

The DFB also issued the following advice:

  • Pull over as soon as it's safe to do so
  • Get everyone out of the car
  • Move to a safe place away from the carriageway
  • Call 999 or 112
  • Keep clear of the vehicle
  • Don't return to vehicle
