A leading Kildare recruitment expert has offered advice to people thinking of changing jobs at the start of 2023.

A director at Naas-based Clark Recruitment, Stephen Farrell O’Callaghan said that January and February are a very busy time for the jobs market with a lot of people deciding to change their job as part of their New Year’s resolutions.

With many vacancies in various sectors compared to previous years, Stephen believes the market has swung in favour of job seekers and that the onus is on employers to do their best to attract new staff.

And he offered simple tips to help candidates secure the position - and the pay rise - they deserve.

Starting with the CV, Stephen urged people to check that there is no key information missing like contact details - as this can often happen when using job portals - and this can leave an employer with the wrong first impression.

Clark Recruitment, which offers a pro bono CV service, said this key document is the first point of contact between an applicant and a potential employer and it must do its very best to sell the skills and experience of the candidate.

In relation to job interviews, Stephen said: “There are a lot of online interviews now probably as a consequence of the pandemic, but I would always encourage people to meet their potential employers face to face.

“This allows the candidate and employer to get to know each other better and gives the candidate an opportunity to learn about the values and culture of the company.”

He added: “Do your research about the potential employer and find out as much current information as you can so that you come across as informed and interested as you possibly can.”

Stephen also advised job applicants to take part in any employment assessments offered such as psychometric tests as they give the potential employee and the potential employer a greater understanding of the suitability to a role.

The recruitment expert also urged job seekers to think strategically when going for job opportunities and to ask themselves: ‘do I see myself staying with this company for 12 months or more’.
