'We want everyone to know they are not alone': Newbridge and Kildare Samaritans to mark Samaritans Awareness Day 2026

The branch answers approximately 80 phone calls per day
The Newbridge and Kildare branch of The Samaritans has announced that it is preparing to mark Samaritans Awareness Day 2026.
According to the branch, the day will serve as a deliberate acknowledgement of the round the clock nature of the service, which can be reached on freephone 116 123 or by emailing [email protected], at any time of day or night, free of charge.
Newbridge and Kildare Samaritans has revealed that it will be at Whitewater Shopping Centre and Dunnes Stores in Newbridge, as well as Manor Mills Shopping Centre in Maynooth, on the day in order to raise awareness of the service in the local community.
The branch is also looking at the possibility to host events at Athy, Naas, Leixlip and Celbridge on the day.
‘AN IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY’
Speaking ahead of the event, Heidi Shanahan, the branch director with Newbridge and Kildare Samaritans, said: “Samaritans Awareness Day gives us an important opportunity to remind people that The Samaritans are here 24 hours a day for anyone in crisis or struggling to cope, on freephone 116 123.”
“It remains a challenging time for many people, and we want everyone to know they are not alone.”
Ms Shanahan added: “Our volunteers are here at any time of day or night, whatever someone is facing; our branch answers approximately 80 calls per day.”
The Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide and that it prevents suicide through the power of human connection.
To mark the day and help raise funds for Samaritans across Ireland, supporters are also being invited to choose from four challenge categories — gamers, swimmers, crafters and supporters for the organisation — and to make the challenge their own.
It should be noted that participants don't need to go all in for a full 24 hours — they can spread their challenge over a few days, take it on solo, or team up with friends.
The organisation has emphasised that all funds raised will support Samaritans branches across both Ireland and Northern Ireland, including its Newbridge and Kildare branch.
Samaritans Awareness Day 2026 will take place on Friday, July 24, 2026 (24/7).
