KILDARE TOWN

A woman with 22 previous theft convictions has been sentenced over a drive-off offence she committed in Kildare town.

Evelina Muraskauskaite, with an address listed as Apartment 28, Block B, Hazelwood in Newbridge, but who is currently serving a custodail sentence, pleaded guilty to committing the offence when she appeared before Judge Desmond Zaidan on Thursday, July 25 last.

Gardaí present in Naas District Court told Judge Zaidan that on February 21, 2022, the 38-year-old had driven off from Fitzpatrick's Garage in Kildare town without paying for fuel worth €53.99.

The court heard that no violence was used and that she was the only person in the car at the time of the offence.

Gardaí also said that Ms Muraskauskaite has 64 previous convictions, 22 of which relate to theft offences, and 26 for road traffic offences.

Defending barrister Aisling Murphy told Judge Zaidan that her client is currently seeking to address her heroin addiction, and hopes to take up a treatment programme soon.

She added that her client is disqualified from driving at present.

Judge Zaidan imposed an eight-month custodial sentence on Ms Muraskauskaite, which was activated with immediate effect.

He also set appeal at €250.
