Kildare County Council plans for a 'high-quality community building' at the former Maynooth Fire Station site

Kildare County Council has confirmed it has taken possession of the former fire station in Maynooth, on March 3 2026.

The local authority further confirmed its intention is to deliver a high-quality community building at the former site, to support a range of activities, sports and leisure groups.

Confirmation came from the council following a question raised by local Labour councillor, Angela Feeney at a recent Clane Maynooth Municipal District meeting held on Friday, May 1 2026.

The council stated that the project will require “significant investment”, and that it will be a long-term, 3-phase process.

The immediate focus, the report stated, will be on the fire station building, and bringing as much of the building into a usable condition for safe community use.

Speaking of the council's report after the meeting, Cllr Feeney said: “This is a cause very close to my heart.

“Five years ago I submitted a motion asking that when the time would come for the old fire station to be vacated that the Council would ring-fence the building to be used for community use, a much needed community centre for Maynooth. That motion was successful, all those five years ago".

With the recent official opening of the new fire station for Maynooth, this prompted Cllr Feeney to request an update on the feasibility study the Council is carrying out on the vacated fire station.

Cllr Feeney added: "I welcome the positive report and I thank the Council for progressing this and its commitment to deliver a high-quality community building that will support a wide range of activities, sports, and local groups.

"It's great to see that the Council is very committed to this important project for Maynooth and hope to get planning permission and have a shovel ready project. So, there is plenty happening and that is very good to see".

Site investigations for the building have now been commissioned, and an energy audit is currently in its final stages, with the report expected shortly.

In addition, an expression of interest has been lodged with the Just Transition Fund, seeking funding for a feasibility study regarding a potential green roof, bicycle circular economy hub, and interpretative space.

The report noted that once a robust design proposal is in place, consultation with the elected members and the local community will take place.
