Army called in to rescue people from floods due to record rainfall

While most households were enjoying turkey and ham leftovers on St Stephen's Day, members of the Ist Infantry Battalion were deployed on flood relief duties alongside the Fire Services in Co Galway.

Troops helped Galway County Council provide assistance to households in the Kiltartan, Labane and Gort areas.

Troops also improved defence measures such as building embankments from sandbags.

The Defence Forces thanked all personnel involved in the efforts and wished all households affected a speedy recovery and a happy New Year.
