A mortar bomb was detonated in the Ballymore Eustace area yesterday evening by members from the Army Bomb Disposal Unit after a worker stumbled upon the device while cutting down a tree.
Donal O’Sullivan, who runs the Goodfellers Tree Care and Property Maintenance business, was on a normal days work in on the Kildare border when he spotted the device hanging in a tree that he and his colleague were about to cut down.
The Bomb Disposal Unit arrived and homes in the vicinity were evacuated for obvious reasons, while part of the road was sealed off. The army detonated the bomb, and Donal described it as ‘a massive bang’.
“The army lads said that if that went off it would have killed everybody within 25 metres and within 50 metres it would have caused serious damage,” Donal told KildareNow.
