Poll topping Naas councillor Bill Clear has left the Social Democrats and will run in the forthcoming general election as an independent.

His decision comes soon after his party selected Aidan Farrelly, also a county councillor based in the Clane area, to run in the election for the party in bid to retain the Kildare North seat held by long serving Catherine Murphy.

Cllr Nuala Killeen, based in Celbridge, also unsuccessfully sought the party nomination to succeed Leixlip-based Murphy.

In a lengthy statement Cllr Clear said he has done so with a heavy heart.

"After deep reflection I have made this difficult decision to step down from the party. I have made this decision to step down in order to pursue other opportunities that align more with my personal and political aspirations," he said.

He added: "This decision has not been taken lightly. Throughout my time with the Social Democrats, I have been proud to advocate for the values and principles they stand for. I have worked alongside incredible colleagues who share a commitment to positive change and a better future for our community and county."

He said after careful consideration it is time "for me to explore new avenues that will allow me to contribute in different and in more positive ways."

He said he looks back on his time with the party "with pride and appreciation" and he especially thanked Catherine Murphy.

He said he didn't win the nomination despite delivering their biggest vote in Kildare North.

In the Kildare County Council poll three months ago, he won 1975 first preferences, comfortably exceeding the quota and he was the only candidate in the Naas area elected on the first count.
