Call for Kildare church to be declared derelict

Councillors will meet on May 20 to discuss a wide range of motions and questions affecting communities across Newbridge, Kildare Town, Kilcullen, Monasterevin and surrounding areas.
Traffic safety, housing targets and major infrastructure projects are among the issues set to dominate the next meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District later this month.
Councillors will meet on May 20 to discuss a wide range of motions and questions affecting communities across Newbridge, Kildare Town, Kilcullen, Monasterevin and surrounding areas.
Councillor Brian O’Loughlin has called on the council to add Feighcullen Church in Rathangan to the derelict sites register.

The Church of Ireland building, built in 1829 to designs by John Semple, is a notable example of Georgian Gothic architecture in Co Kildare.
Experts say the limestone structure retains strong architectural and historical significance.
Cllr O'Loughlin is also seeking an update on the redevelopment of St John’s Convent in Rathangan.
Several motions focus on road safety and traffic management. Councillor Peggy O’Dwyer has called for school zone markings at Caragh National School, while Councillor Tracey O’Dwyer is seeking a safety audit at the entrance to Mountain View and Blackrath Ridge estates in Athgarvan. She has also requested that the council begin the process for a pedestrian crossing in Kilcullen opposite Nicholastown and Conroy Park estates to improve access to the community centre and Field of Dreams walkway.
Councillor Noel Heavey is calling for a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing opposite the main gate of Scoil na Naomh Uilig and has also proposed a pilot speed camera project on Barrettstown Road in Newbridge. Meanwhile, Councillor Tom McDonnell has requested additional speed ramps in Moanbane Park, Kilcullen, and a bus shelter at Cross and Passion School.
Housing and regeneration issues are also due to be discussed.Councillor Rob Power has asked the council to outline any potential impact on housing targets following the rejection by An Coimisiún Pleanála of a proposed 569-unit development at Great Connell.
Questions are also expected on the long-awaited second bridge for Newbridge, the Monasterevin Active Travel scheme, the reopening of study facilities at Newbridge Library and future plans for the Old Courthouse building in Kildare Town.
Councillors will also discuss local property tax allocations, municipal road works and arts awards for 2026 during the meeting. Other matters on the agenda include concerns over bin storage in town centres, repairs at St Conleth’s Cemetery and updates on the Curragh Plains Management Plan. Members are also seeking progress reports on the Monasterevin Textile and Fashion Hub and possible alternative sites for a proposed youth centre in Newbridge. The meeting is expected to cover a broad range of local issues affecting residents, transport, housing and community development across the municipal district.
