Fianna Fáil Deputy Leader in the Seanad and Local Senator Fiona O’Loughlin has called for the establishment of a taskforce between Kildare County Council, Waterways Ireland and An Garda Siochana to tackle the issue of illegal use of the Blueway by scramblers and sulkies.

O’Loughlin said, “I have been contacted by residents in Ballyteague, near the 20th lock on the grand canal. There is a huge issue in terms of anti social behaviour and young people essentially joy riding on the Blueway with motorised vehicles and sulkies. Local residents are completely intimidated because of the behaviour on the Blueway and on some local roads.

“There are also complaints of ant social behaviour on the Blueway which is further impacting residents.”

O’Loughlin concluded, “In the Seanad this morning I called for the establishment of a taskforce comprising of Kildare County Council, Waterways Ireland and An Garda Siochana to tackle the issue of illegal use of the Blueway by motorised and sulkies.”
