€150,000 is to be spent on weekly market in Kildare town

'Town centres should be prioritised'
Some €150,000 has been provided through Kildare County Council to promote the market in Kildare town.
It follows concerns raised by local councillor Suzanne Doyle about the reduced number of traders at the weekly event which takes place on Thursdays.
The money comes from the town and village renewal grant scheme.
The application to secure the money outlined proposals to support the growth of the market by promoting it to new stall holders.
This is aimed at bringing more customers and as well as complementing the enterprises of traditional stall holders.
Cllr Doyle has also sought funding to support customised stalls that can offer better shelter with a customer friendly layout that optimises space - using architects to design a model.
“KCC has invested a lot of time and energy into planning a new public space for Kildare town. While this is welcome, for the plan to succeed it will be equally important to decide how the space is used. Investing in the activation of this space is important and will give us a means to invest in the market,” said Cllr Doyle.
The aim is to reimagine the space into a dynamic venue, modelled on successful contemporary markets, like those run in suburban Dublin which are supported by professional management.
Cllr Doyle said the market graders association has been asked for advice and it’s hoped the plan will be delivered in consultation with representatives of market traders “who have the experience and knowledge to help grow our market.”
Cllr Doyle believes a rejuvenated market will strengthen the town centres, build community integration and support local town-based businesses.
“This is the best way to give priority to our town centres,"she added.
