A hedgehog, swan, fox and buzzard were among the patients cared for by Kildare Wildlife Rescue over the Christmas period.

A young female hedgehog was brought into the community-based wildlife rescue and rehab group after she was found on a driveway.

Kildare Wildlife Rescue said she had two infected wounds which they said are probably from a dog. The experts urged dog owners to keep their pets leashed wherever there is wildlife present.

A buzzard picked up in County Wicklow was also brought to Kildare Wildlife Rescue and it initially struggled to eat.

The experts had to place it into an oxygen chamber for 24 hours to help it thrive.

A spokesperson said: "He has started to eat and is improving daily. Young animals are really struggling this time of year as it gets tougher to find food."

Meanwhile a cygnet was found in an injured and weakened state.

Kildare Wildlife Rescue said her injuries were consistent with an attack by a mink which is an invasive species and sightings should be reported to the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
