The pressure is on to make a compulsory purchase of a historic but derelict Naas property.

Nasa councillors have asked Kildare County Council to use its powers under the Derelict Sites Act to compulsory acquire the Market House at Harbour View.

Cllr Evie Sammon said this should be done  for community use, social enterprises or a commercial purpose.

She said this should be done in keeping with the aims for the future use of the Grand Canal area in the Naas local area plan.

Green Party councillor Bob Quinn commented that it will be important to ensure that Kildare County Council has a plan for its use in the future.

He also told a Naas Municipal District meeting that it will be equally important to ensure that the money is available to transform the building - otherwise the future of the building should be left to a private developer.
