A Naas District Court Judge admitted that he was concerned for a 21-year-old man with 53 previous convictions.

Judge Desmond Zaidan made the comments in the case of Tommy Carthy, with an address listed as Caravan 1, Canalside in Athy.

Mr Carthy appeared via video-link as he is currently serving a custodial sentence for other offences, and is due for release next year.

Gardaí told Judge Zaidan that on December 3, 2021, he stole a drill set worth €129.99 from the Aldi store in Newbridge, while intoxicated.

Then, just two days later, Mr Carthy returned to the store and stole clothing and bedding worth €177.

The items were not recovered.

Gardaí also said that he has 53 previous convictions, 26 of which are for theft offences.

Judge Zaidan remarked that the fact that he was intoxicated at the time of the first offence was not an excuse for his behaviour, saying: "No one made him take the substances."

Speaking directly to Mr Carthy, he urged him to try to learn a skill and to 'do something with his life.'

"You are a young man, but 53 previous convictions… that’s not the way forward, Tommy," he added.

He imposed a six-month sentence on Mr Carthy.
