KILDARE ANIMALS IN NEED: Dale on the mend after being abandoned

KWWSPCA COLUMN

The volunteers in our cat unit were recently asked to help three very neglected cats who were abandoned in a house in Naas and were desperately trying their best to survive.

The owners left the house seven months ago, leaving the three cats alone to fend for themselves.

As these cats were indoor and tame, they did not have the instinct to hunt for food. A neighbour did his best to keep an eye on them and feed them, but he had poor health and had to go to hospital recently. One of the cats that we rescued was a long haired cat and her coat had grown so long that it was matted around her body and she could barely move.

Because of her immobility and with no hunting instinct to feed, she was very thin.

The vet removed a large amount of her coat, which was a heavy weight for her to manage. A woman who heard about this case kindly knitted some lovely coats to keep this cat warm.

The second cat that we named Dale is blind and also under weight.

They are making a slow recovery in our Kitty Cottage but they are very wary of human contact. We plan to rehome the three of them together as soon as they are physically strong again. It’s such a pity that the home owners didn’t contact ourselves or any nearby animal rescue so that this level of cruelty could have been avoided.
