Kildare County Council has no say over how Department of Defence accommodation is used.

Cllr Chris Pender was told that some 62 married quarters are located on working army bases and the use of accommodation by the department or the Defence Forces is not a matter for KCC.

The Newbridge councillor said the council should seek to enter into a leasing agreement to bring these properties into immediate use as interim or long term accommodation for families in Kildare.

He also wanted funding to be sought from the Department of Housing to pay for this.

He said KCC should take a more proactive approach and he told a KCC meeting that  “we should engage in constructive dialogue with the department or the army.”

He added: “It’s a wasted opportunity at a time when there is a shortage of accommodation."
