Kildare gardai warn public on definition of an 'e-bike'

An Garda Síochána Naas recently seized a non-compliant vehicle
An Garda Síochána Naas Roads Policing Unit in Kildare were out on patrol recently and seized an “e-bike” that turned out to be something entirely different.
Gardai soon determined that the vehicle had a throttle, which makes it an e-moped, not a bicycle.
According to gardai, this isn't just a technicality, and in effect means:
-
You need a valid driving licence
-
You must have insurance
-
You are required to wear a helmet
-
The vehicle must meet road traffic regulations

A garda spokesperson stated: “If you’re riding one of these without meeting the legal requirements, you’re not just bending the rules — you’re breaking the law and risking serious consequences, including seizure of your bike, fines, and penalty points.
“This seizure is a clear message: enforcement is happening. Parents, riders, and sellers — be aware. What looks like a harmless e-bike could land you in serious trouble if it crosses into e-moped territory.
“If it has a throttle and can move without pedalling, it’s NOT an e-bike under Irish law.
Stay informed. Stay legal. Stay safe."
