No money is available to provide public lighting for a busy road in Naas.

There was a request for lighting  on the Rathasker Road “in the interests of public safety” by Cllr Anne Breen.

She said the road is dark and there is a speeding issue.

She told a Naas Municipal District meeting that it’s used by children going to school  and elderly people have requested lights.

Cllr Bill Clear said this could be funded by development levies pid as a result of planning permissions for construction work. He added that a lot of development has taken place there and a lot of levies were paid to Kildare County Council.

Another councillor, Seamie Moore, said that the public lights currently extend for just one third of the route and there are “no lights after this.” He added developers who built in the area should be responsible for providing new lights.

According to KCC it does not have funding for additional lighting in the budget. The request will be added to a register “and will be reviewed and ranked once funds become available.”
