Kildare people with mental health difficulties are in inappropriate accommodation

A call has been made for Kildare County Council to support the establishment of housing for individuals with mental health difficulties in the form of supported accommodation.
It came from Newbridge councillor Chris Pender who said it should come in the form of supported accommodation by “actively reaching out” to bodies which provide the housing.
The councillor, who is a general election candidate for the Social Democrats in Kildare South, told a KCC meeting there are people who are living in appropriate settings and more needs to be done to tackle this.

He said KCC should actively engage with organisations dealing with people with mental health difficulties.
KCC official Siobhan Scully said the council supported Focus Ireland to lease 21 properties in the Celbridge-Leixlip area to accommodate people with a mental health disability.
Ms Scully also said that a specialist accommodation officer is shared between Kildare and Wicklow. She added that KCC operates a tenancy sustainability services and engages with the HSE.
