Local politician criticises government over polls
Both of the proposed changes to the Constitution - the Care amendment and and Family amendment - were rejected by Kildare.

The Care proposal lost by 27,054 votes to 12,628 in Kildare North. In Kildare South, it was defeated by 27,051 votes to 8380.
Kildare South voters rejected both amendments by bigger margins than those in Kildare North.
In Kildare South, the No vote was 69.6% for the Family poll and 76.3% for the Care poll while in Kildare North the No vote was 59.8% for the Family poll and 68.1% for the Care poll.
Voter turnout was 48.1% in Kildare North and 45.7% in Kildare South
Green Party councillor Peter Hamilton expressed disappointment with the result.
“I campaigned for a yes vote in both referendums and I believe that fear, uncertainty and doubt has led to the results,” he said.
The Maynooth politician said the wording of the Family amendment was badly drafted and “confused many people.”
