A professional is needed to ‘remove the dirt and staining’

The iconic ‘Naas Ball’ needs a good scrub.

Kildare County Council has been asked to find the funding and resources to carry out a full clean up along with conservation measures and maintenance work.

According to a local councillor it needs to be professionally cleaned to “remove dirt and environmental staining.”

Cllr Carmel Kelly also said an inspection should be done as well as minor repairs.

She said the work should include fixing any damage or wear and applying protective treatment to help prevent weathering.

Unveiled some thirty years ago and officially known as Perpetual Motion, the structure is the distinctive feature of the M7 Naas bypass - Ireland’s first ever motorway - which opened in 1983.

The spherical structure is a tubular steel sphere, onto which a 50mm layer of concrete was sprayed to create the road-like surface effect once the surface was painted.
