LATEST: Jesuits receive 14 complaints relating to former priest's time at private school in Kildare

The Jesuit Order in Ireland revealed it has received 93 complaints of sexual, physical and emotional abuse of boys by the former priest and teacher Joseph Marmion, who taught for a number of years at Clongowes Wood College in Clane.
Of the 93 complaints of abuse received against him, 14 relate to to Clongowes Wood College.
Marmion had two stints at Clongowes in the 1950s and 1960s.
Between 1951-1952 he carried out his Regency teaching in Clongowes and training for his Certificate in Education (equivalent to the Higher Diploma in Education).
He was later appointed to the senior position of Prefect of Studies at Clongowes in July 1962 and stayed at the school until 1965.
Marmion, who retired due to ill health in 1999, died in November 2000.
In March 2021, the Society of Jesus asked victims of Marmion to engage with the Order and a restorative justice programme was established.
A report published by the Society of Jesus, which is a narrative record of Marmion's abuse, says 45 of the 93 complaints received from 1977 related to child sexual abuse.
Marmion spent most of his time teaching at Belvedere College but also taught at Clongowes Wood College and Crescent College in Limerick.
Of the 93 complaints of abuse received against him, 14 relate to Crescent College, 14 to Clongowes Wood College and 65 to Belvedere College, RTE reports.
Excluding Marmion, there were also 34 complaints of sexual abuse received against 19 other Jesuits at these three schools.
These complaints were received by the Society between 1965 and 2023 and were reported to have occurred between 1940 and 1991.
Despite naming Marmion in 2021, the report notes that the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus does not normally publish identities of Jesuits who become "the subject of complaints".
Anyone who has any concerns or who has suffered abuse at the hands of any Jesuit are asked to contact the Order's Safeguarding Office by emailing: [email protected].
Or by phoning the Jesuit Safeguarding Helpline on 00 353 830874254 (Monday-Friday 8 am to 8pm; Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 2pm).
