Memorabilia of Hollywood legend on display at Newbridge Silverware

Personal items, clothing and costumes once owned and worn by much loved screen legend Judy Garland is on show at the Museum of Style Icons at Newbridge Silverware until the end of September.
The talented actress died in 1969 aged just 47 but leaves a wonderful legacy behind her and will be forever remembered as ‘Dorothy’ in the 1939 classic movie ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
The items which will be on show at Newbridge Silverware before being auctioned by Julien’s Auctions in LA, are expected to attract huge interest from movie buffs who consider Judy Garland to be of the most memorable screen actresses of the Hollywood Golden Age. She was a fabulous singer and actress and her talent as a performer was also passed down to her children who include showbiz powerhouse, Liza Minelli and celebrated actress, Lorna Luft.
The most prominent item in the collection is the dress Garland wore to marry her fourth husband, American actor Mark Heron in 1964. Sadly, the gown lasted longer than the actress’ marriage to Heron which ended after only five months of marriage. The dress, a custom made embellished cream Bob Mackie ensemble, was also worn by the screen icon on other marked occasions including a 1964 concert tour and a 1965 appearance on the ‘Ed Sullivan Show’.
The red velvet ball gown which featured in her movie ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’will be a treat to behold for fans of the Hollywood legend. The dress has a tiny fitted boned bodice with a sweetheart neckline and puffed sleeves with a full red skirt. The elegant dress will be known to Judy devotees as she wore it whilst singing ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ in the movie which was filmed in 1944.
Other notable pieces in the display include a two-piece suede fringed bodice Judy Garland wore as ‘Ginger Grey’ in Crazy Girl, from 1943 and a navy-blue silk dress which she wore whilst starring in ‘Summer Stock’ with Gene Kelly in 1950. Also on show is a deep turquoise waistcoat Garland sported in her Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning movie ‘A Star is Born’ from 1954. Judy enthusiasts will recognise this item as the acclaimed actress and singer wore it performing the song ‘Born In A Trunk’ in the iconic movie.
Other items include a burnt orange and ivory dress Garland wore whilst starring as ‘Manuela Alva’ in ‘The Pirate’ in 1948, alongside Gene Kelly anda red and white cotton gingham day dress in the movie ‘Life Begins for Andy Hardy’ (MGM, 1941).
Martin Nolan of Julien’s Auctions who will be auctioning the items on November 16th in LA said, “Judy Garland remains as a much loved iconic Hollywood figure and these items will definitely bring Judy fans on a trip down memory lane. The items show the intricate tailoring and fashions of a bygone era and the Hollywood Golden Age of cinema.
Garments like the navy blue swimsuit Judy wore in ‘For Me and My Gal’ in 1913 show how different fashions were back then. The swimming costume consists of bathing dress with puffed sleeves with a striped trim and bows; a pair of bloomers; a cummerbund with a bow; and a swim cap. Certainly, a very interesting and unusual piece although I’m not quite sure how easy it would have been to swim in it!”
