Machinery was working on the Kildare route to warn motorists that road works were in progress

A motorist who collided with an Impact Protection Vehicle on N7 near Naas was prosecuted at the local court.

IPVs are moveable vehicles deployed on main roads and the motorway system to warn oncoming motorists that road works are in progress there and to divert drivers away from where the works are taking place.

Jiji Scaria, 51, whose address was given as Apartment 282, Block G1 Lansdowne Gate, Landsdowne, was prosecuted for driving with excess alcohol at Blackchurch on August 25, 2022.

The court heard that over €39,000 worth of damage was caused as a result of the impact.

A blood sample returned a reading of 147 and nobody was injured.

The court heard that the defendant had no prior convictions but had six convictions after this incident, including one for drink driving.

Judge Desmond Zaidan told the man, who’s from India, that he has a problem with alcohol.

He said most people “would say a decade of the Rosary” having survived the accident the defendant was involved in, rather than drink and drive at a later date.

The defendant was fined a total of €2,000 for drink driving and dangerous driving. He was also disqualified for four years. He told the judge that he had quit drinking.
