There are 144 homeless people in County Kildare
Nearly 700 people are homeless across a region made up of three counties, including Kildare.
This figure includes some 184 children.
There are 144 homeless people in County Kildare alone.
The latest homelessness figures highlight the devastating consequences of the government’s housing failures, according to Cllr Aidan Farrelly.
He said: “In the Mid-East region, which includes Kildare, there are 692 people living in homeless emergency accommodation and nationwide, there are now 14,429 people living in homeless emergency accommodation – the highest ever recorded in the history of the state.
Disgracefully, he added, 4,401 of these are children – a 66 percent increase since this Government took charge.
He added the government has been unable to get to grips with the housing crisis as the number of people in homeless accommodation rose every month this year.
“Fianna Fáil promised to turn the page on the housing crisis when Darragh O’Brien was appointed Minister for Housing. In reality, they have turned a crisis into a disaster,” said Cllr Farrelly, the Social Democrats candidate in Kildare North for the next general election.
