Rainsford Hendy was also a candidate in general elections

Tributes have been paid to Rainsford Hendy, former member of Kildare County Council and Mayor of the Country passed away over the weekend.

Rainsford was first elected to Kildare County Council in 1991 serving almost two decades representing the Athy electoral area up to 2009 when he retired.

He held the position of Mayor of the County and also contested two general elections.

Fine Gael TD and Minister of State Martin Heydon said: "During Rainsford's time as a member of KCC, he delivered locally for individuals, local businesses and community groups.

"He was passionate about public service and continued to highlight local issues and campaign long after his own career in local government had ended."

He added: "Rainsford was a great friend, mentor and supporter of mine, encouraging me to go into politics when he decided to retire in 2009.

"Ever since he has been a constant support to me in my political career."

Mr Hendy was a proud supporter of the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day in memory of his wife Hazel and sold Daffodils in the area for 44 years up to 2024.

A post on its Facebook page said: "We are saddened to know of the passing of Rainsford Hendy … a loyal patron and friend to the Piers Cafe.

"He had a favourite seat where he enjoyed a chat, a small cappuccino and a browse of the Irish Times every day for several years now.

"May you rest well Rainsford. Sincere condolences to your daughters Elizebeth, Jill and Sandra, son Robert, your partner and constant companion June and all of their families."
