A woman who used someone else’s debit card to make a number of purchases was prosecuted at Naas District Court.

Bridget Williams, 20, whose address was given as 16 Churchfield Gardens, Churchfield, Cork, was before the court.

The court was told that items were bought at McDonald's, a Chinese restaurant and at a Spar store in Edward Street, Newbridge.

Sgt Mary Meade said that the gardaí in Portlaoise received a report that a Visa Card had been “tapped” a number of times.

She added that the value of the goods was €85.40 and the incidents took place on April 2, 2023.

Defending solicitor Matt Byrne said the defendant found the card on the ground after it had fallen out of the injured party’s pocket when she was shopping.

He added she had a number of friends with her and “there was some peer pressure.”

He also said the defendant had family members with her in court.

He said he believes she deserves a chance and she had brought €200 with her as a charitable donation or to be given to the victim.

The court also heard that the account holder had been refunded.

The court heard the defendant is unemployed and left school after the  Junior Cert exams.

Judge Desmond Zaidan urged her to get a skill or an apprenticeship or she will be unemployed for the rest of her life.

The defendant was bound to the peace for 12 months.
