The contrast between local roads and motorways was highlighted in public recently where the state of a local road that residents and farmers depend upon was highlighted in County Hall Portlaoise.

Laois County Council was called upon to complete urgent repairs on a stretch of road where residents have counted 28 potholes. It's not far from the two main motorways that run through the county the M7 and M8.

That's according to Cllr James Kelly, Independent, who called for short-term action and a long-term plan on the road at Cuddagh South. He raised the issue at a meeting with Laois County Council management and engineers where he called for remedial road repairs and drainage cut outs.

"I was on the road with residents. We did a count and there are 28 potholes on the road," he said.

He said there is also a lot of water pooling on the road which causes further issues. Apart from local householders impacted, he said farmers also require a proper surface to go about their work.

Cllr Kelly also called on the local authority to include the road in the next three-year roads upgrade programme.

Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, said maintenance crews will attend to this road in the coming weeks.

Cllr Kelly raised the issues at the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District Meeting.
