Accused of assaulting a garda in Portlaoise

A man appeared in court accused of assaulting a garda in Portlaoise.
Jordan Byrne, 24, of 21 Abbey Court, Portlaoise is accused of being intoxicated and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at Market Square in Portlaoise on January 1, 2024. He is further charged with assault at Portlaoise Garda Station on the same date.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that a file was gone to the DPP in relation to the matter. He said the defendant had allegedly assaulted a member of An Garda Siochana.
Judge Nicola Andrews granted the defendant legal aid and adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on May 13.
