Measures are being considered to slow traffic through Killenard

A range of measures look set to be introduced to slow traffic through a Laois village.

Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins requested new warning signs on the approach to Killenard in a motion during a recent meeting.

He asked “that Laois County Council erect Digital Speed Signs on both approach roads in Killenard”. Cllr Mullins said the issue was separate to the works at the Mount St Anne’s junction where speed is also an issue.

In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan, said “the Municipal District Roads office in conjunction with the Road Safety Engineer is currently reviewing the existing arrangements with line marking improvements, additional signage (both standard and digital) under consideration. The Road Design section is also currently reviewing existing urban speed limits across the District including Killenard which will be coming up for public consultation over 2026.”

Cllr Mullins thanked Mr Drennan and said road safety measures were needed in the village particularly in light of the increased population in the area. He expects the population to grow further as he said land in the area was due to be rezoned for housing.

Mr Drennan said digital speed signs were under consideration at the school zone and the matter would be referred for consideration.

“There could be a 30km limit designated around that school”, said Mr Drennan.

Fine Gael Cllr Vivienne Phelan said she believed the measures would be very worthwhile, particularly for visitors from outside the area.

The issue was discussed at the April meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District which was held in the newly refurbished Market House in Portarlington.
