A man appeared in court accused of stealing €10,000 in a burglary at a Sue Ryder complex in Laois.

Darren Broughan (47) of 32 Colliers Wood, Colliers Lane, Portlaoise, is accused of burglary at Sue Ryder Foundation, Kilminchy, Portlaoise on September 29 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the case could be heard in the district court subject to a judge accepting jurisdiction. He said the burglary occurred overnight when there was nobody in the premises.

Detective Garda Paul Kelly said €10,000 in cash was stolen and Judge Tom MacSharry said he couldn’t accept jurisdiction. However, Det Kelly went on to explain that €9,305 was returned days later.

“I will accept jurisdiction on the basis of what you told me,” said Judge MacSharry.

Solicitor Brian Duffy said his client wasn’t working at present and he requested legal aid.

Judge MacSharry granted legal aid and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on November 9.
