Bad crash in Laois 'where an accident was waiting to happen'

A collision at Camross was inevitable according to a county councillor who has called on Laois County Council to take action.
Cllr Conor Bergin called on the local authority to address the road safety issues at Scully’s cross on the L-1031 at Longford in Camross when he raised the matter at a recent meeting with council officials.
He said three main roads coming into the village from a number of directions meet close to a sharp turn into the Ard Eirn estate.
“It has been an accident waiting to happen for a long time and there was a serious accident recently where two cars were written off after they collided at the junction,” he said.
He said residents informed him about the crash and are aware of the dangers but are concerned due to the rise in visitors passing through the village on the way to the Slieve Blooms.
He said locals fear these people will not the right of way. Apart from more signs, he wants speed to be reduced.
Cllr James Kelly, Independent, supported and said he had a close call recently on the junction even though he is familiar with the junction.
Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, replied in writing to the motion.
"Laois County Council staff will arrange to meet with Cllr Bergin at the site to assess the need for safety improvement works," he said.
The issue was raised at the May 2023 meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
