'Ballot box' cigarette bins coming to Laois

Laois is getting a new type of bin to entice smokers to stop littering the streets with their butts.
Laois County Council has announced it is going to buy Ballot Bins using a Government grant.
Such bins have two clear glass panels on the front of a choice of two containers, with a question printed above each hole for people to vote on, such as their favourite football team.
The branded bins that may be made in the UK retail at £372 plus VAT.
The council has received over €82,000 for anti-dumping initiatives in 2023.
Laois County Council will spend part of that on two more free bulky waste collection days, and more on a billboard campaign to raise awareness of illegal waste disposal.
Discarding cigarette butts is littering, which can incur an on-the-spot fine of €150 or on summary conviction to a fine of up to €3,000, under the Litter Pollution Act 1997."
