Laois County Council is asked to install the bandstand for public performances

A Portlaoise councillor has suggested installing a permanent bandstand outside the town's library, so that buskers and other musicians can add to the town's atmosphere.

Cllr Tommy Mulligan tabled a motion to the September meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

"There is a strong music scene in the tow, with the popularity of Portlaoise Comhaltas and Laois Music Generation, community and church choirs, and plenty of buskers around the town.

"It would be a great opportunity to offer musicians and artists a chance to perform before the public," he said.

He suggests that the money come from the Urban Regeneration Development Fund.

"With the redevelopment of Main Street connected to the cultural quarter and the proposal of pedestrianising sections, I propose a bandstand be installed. Local businesses might be willing to support and sponsor local artists. It could be used at times of festivals or parades, turning on Christmas lights, podcasts or outdoor broadcasts. With extra seating on Lower Main Street it could become a social recreation area," he said.

Cllr Barry Walsh seconded.

"I had a similar motion before for one in the park in Portlaoise. We need to encourage entertainers," he said.

Cllr Willie Aird said that "we made sure there was a bandstand" at county hall.

"All I see there now is skaters. People can perform there, there is electricity," he said.

In reply to the motion, Acting Director of Services Paul McLoughlin said that "under round 2 of the Urban Regeneration & Development Fund, public realm enhancements will be undertaken along Main Street Portlaoise.

"In the coming weeks, Laois County Council will be tendering for the appointment of a design team to develop proposals. The provision of space and facilities for performances will be considered as part of that," he said.
