Safety barriers to prevent kids from running out onto a road need to be replaced, a recent council meeting was told.

Fianna Fail Cllr Padraig Fleming asked for the damaged barriers on Main Street in Ballylinan to be replaced in a motion at a recent meeting.

He asked: “That Laois County Council replace the damaged safety barriers at the pedestrian crossing on Main Street, Ballylinan and at the playground in Ballylinan in the interest of Health and Safety for all.”

In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Philip McVeigh said “Laois County Council will arrange to carry out repair works for the safety barriers at these locations.”

Cllr Fleming said the barrier is gone and when young people are at the location there is nothing to slow them down. He said the crossing is located near the entrance to a  playground and a barrier is needed for safety.

“If kids are running out there there is at least something to stop them running straight out onto the road,” he remarked.

“It  will make it a lot safer for people crossing the road,” said Cllr Fleming.

Mr McVeigh said he would have to quote for the work.

The issue was discussed at the latest meeting of the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
