The man appeared before Portlaoise District Court

A blocklayer admitted being drunk and disorderly in Portlaoise.

Kevin Flanagan, 37, of Lowran, Pike-of-Rushall admitted being intoxicated and engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour at Main Street, Portlaoise on March 19, 2023.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the accused was “shouting and roaring” at the three females on the street and using derogatory language at 3.15am.

When approached by Gardai the man tried to run away, he said.

“He was drunk and had to be arrested,” said Sgt Kirby.

The defendant had two previous convictions, one for drunk driving and one for not having insurance.

Suzanne Dooner BL said her client was a blocklayer who had been off for a bank holiday weekend when the incident occurred. She said he accepts he had too much to drink.

“He accepts that he used inappropriate language,” she said.

Ms Dooner said her client was “extremely remorseful” and had brought a sum of €100 to court.

Judge Nicola Andrews noted the defendant had already lodged €200 with the court. She struck out the charges on the basis that the defendant donate the money to the court poor box.

The defendant addressed the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

“I would just like to make a public apology for my behaviour on the night in question,” he said.
