Borris-Kilcotton ease past Abbeyleix to register opening round win in Laois SHC

Abbeyleix stayed in touch early on before Borris-Kilcotton's quality shone through
Borris-Kilcotton got their 2026 Laois Shopping Centre Senior Hurling Championship campaign off to the perfect start with a 12-point victory over Abbeyleix in O'Moore Park on Sunday evening.
The sides were evenly matched for much of the opening quarter, but once Borris-Kilcotton found their rhythm they took control, finishing the first half strongly before pulling away after the restart to secure an impressive opening-round win.
There were just 40 seconds on the clock when Eoin Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for Borris-Kilcotton. Eoghan Fennelly replied from a free before Connor Kilbane and PJ Scully restored Borris-Kilcotton's advantage. Abbeyleix answered through Killian Byrne and Cormac Byrne, while Neil Foyle and Fitzpatrick traded scores with Fennelly and Laois Joe McDonagh Cup-winning goalkeeper Eoin Reilly as the sides remained closely matched.
Abbeyleix edged in front for the first time after 13 minutes when Colin Byrne pointed, but the lead was short-lived. Aaron Dunphy won possession brilliantly in the corner, burst past his marker and squared for Jer Quinlan, who finished confidently beyond Enda Rowland. Stephen Dunphy and Joe Campion followed up with points to move Borris-Kilcotton four clear.
Abbeyleix hit back in style with 1-1 of their own to restore parity. Fennelly converted his third free before Colm Walsh flicked the sliotar into the path of Reilly, who blasted to the net past fellow Laois goalkeeper Eoin Fleming. Campion's second point was cancelled out by Liam Delaney, leaving the sides level after 19 minutes.
That proved to be the turning point as Borris-Kilcotton took complete control. Scully opened a run of five unanswered points with a free before Aaron Dunphy, Foyle, Aaron Dunphy again and Stephen Dunphy all found the target. Aaron Dunphy almost added a second goal, but Rowland produced an excellent save before Scully fired the rebound wide.
Reilly added another point for Abbeyleix, but Scully responded with a superb long-range free from inside his own half to send Borris-Kilcotton into the interval leading 1-15 to 1-9.
The winners picked up where they had left off after the restart, with Scully (65), Stephen Dunphy and Campion all pointing. Abbeyleix, after three early wides, briefly threatened when the Byrne brothers combined, Colin picking out Cormac for a well-taken goal.
However, Borris-Kilcotton quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback by reeling off six unanswered points. Quinlan and Aaron Dunphy each struck twice, while Scully and Fitzpatrick also found the target. Rowland denied Stephen Dunphy with another fine save before Colin Byrne replied with a point, although Borris-Kilcotton were firmly in command entering the closing stages.
Scully added another free and Quinlan finished with 1-3 as the gap widened further. Abbeyleix finished with points from Eli Quinn and two more Fennelly frees, but Fitzpatrick had the final say, ending the game as he had begun it by pointing to complete an excellent personal tally of five points from midfield.
