Mountmellick hosts property branding event

Muintir na Tíre’s Community Alert programme is encouraging Laois people to safeguard their tools, phones, vehicles by getting them branded with a mark that will help gardaí track them down in the event of theft.

Muintir na Tíre has teamed up with Tirlán FarmLife to run a property branding event at Tirlán's outlet in Mountmellick.

Property branding uses unique identifier (driver's licence number) to stamp valuable equipment, devices, vehicles and other types of property that might attract criminals. Because it is an easily recordable mark of ownership, Muintir na Tíre say this can be easily used by gardai to identify its owner if recovered after a theft.

The national association for community development also says branding can deter theft and onward sale by thieves. Muintir initiated the concept of property marking and recording in Ireland through community alert groups.
