Portarlington Business Association Sustainability Group has criticised the decision to cut a bus service in Laois that is used by many workers

Portarlington Business Association Sustainability Group has criticised the decision to cut a bus service in Laois that is used by many workers.

The Route 816 Portarlington Connector will cease operation on November 30 due to "declining passenger numbers". The Big Green Bus, operated by Dublin Coach, provides 16 services Monday to Sunday and travels between Portarlington – Monasterevin – Kildare.

The company said: "As a result of declining passenger numbers, Route 816 continues to be uneconomic to operate. It is with regret that we wish to confirm we will be discontinuing this service effective from November 30th 2024."

Portarlington Business Association Sustainability Group has criticised the short notice given to passengers.

"All we hear about in the media is Climate Action and reducing our carbon footprint. Communities have been working tirelessly at trying to support sustainable transport initiatives and ways of reducing cars on our roads. That's why it's hard to conceive that the local bus service from Portarlington to Kildare Village is to cease as of the 30th November.

"No consideration for the number of people who totally rely on this service for work. One weeks notice is all these people have been afforded after being loyal customers for years. If anything our public transport needs to be increased, be efficient and affordable."
