Calls for speed ramps in Laois village to combat persistent speeding

Cllr Conor Bergin highlighted major speeding problems in the village of Ballaghmore
Laois County Council have been called to install a speed ramp in a Laois village, despite previous measures to reduce speed in the area.
Councillor Conor Bergin have urged for Laois County Council to provide a speed ramp outside a residence in the village of Ballaghmore to combat speeding in the area.
The stretch of road identified by Cllr Bergin as an issue is at the bottle bank in Ballaghmore, near St Molua's Catholic Church and Kyle GAA Club.
Speaking at the recent Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick MD meeting, Cllr Bergin explained that electronic speed signs were installed five or six years ago but unfortunately speeding is still a problem in the village.
Cllr Bergin highlighted that there is "a lot of activity in the village", with many cars parking in the area for the church and Caterpillars Childcare. The primary school in Ballaghmore, Gaelscoil Slí Dala, is also almost completed and will be open very soon.
He emphasised that with no speed ramps in the area at all, they are greatly needed in the interest of safety.
Cllr James Kelly supported the motion, although he noted that it is a very wide road and so the installation of speed ramps must be carefully considered.
Cllr King also backed Cllr Bergin, saying that "speed is a major problem in the county."
Indeed, Cllr Bergin noted that the three motions he presented at the April meeting of the MD all involve speeding problems. The other areas mentioned by Cllr Bergin for safety measures to target speeding were Camross and Borris-in-Ossory.
Laois County Council said that the Transportation SPC has approved a new traffic calming measures policy which will be brought to the council for adoption.
They said that they will revisit this issue of speeding in Ballaghmore pending the adoption of the policy.
