A four-point victory means Castletown and Clan na Gael will meet in a de facto semi-final for a place in the final

Castletown were made to work extremely hard to get their first points on the board in the 2026 Laois Shopping Centre U-20 HC after coming out on top over Abbeyleix by four points in the Centre of Excellence on Monday evening.

The victory puts Castletown alongside Clan na Gael on two points, with both sides having now beaten Abbeyleix and lost to The Harps. That means The Harps are now assured of a place in the final, their fifth in a row, and Abbeyleix can go no further regardless of their result against The Harps in Round 3. Castletown and Clan na Gael will face off in Clonad in a de facto semi-final on the 15th of November, with the winner taking on The Harps in the final.

As for the game itself, it was a mighty battle between the sides with very little spared and referee John Lalor let the game flow from the outset, making for a very entertaining game despite the relatively low scoring.

Within just seconds of the throw-in, Tom Og Phelan launched over a peach of an effort from midfield for Castletown, setting the tone for an excellent individual performance from the youngster. Abbeyleix were ahead by the seventh minute though, with a pointed free from Cormac Byrne and a good score from play by Declan Iguma before Kyron Cuddy levelled things up again with a free of his own.

The Fung were showing a lot more physicality early on in the game and went two points ahead with a long-range effort by Sean O'Donnell and one from play by Byrne after great work again by Iguma on the inside line at the midway stage of the half.

Cian Kirwan got Castletown back on track with an excellent score under pressure and Phelan followed after great work in the build-up by Ryan Byrne and Dan Whelan. Castletown's tails were up and Kyron Cuddy managed to win possession and went running into the space in front before being hauled down, though he pointed the resulting free. Dan Jones hit back for Abbeyleix after showing a great turn of pace and Byrne put them back into the lead from a free after a foul on Iguma.

There was late drama in the half, however, when Cuddy was once again fouled deep inside the Abbeyleix half and Phelan stepped up to bury it in for a goal, giving Castletown a 1-5 to 0-6 lead despite never looking settled.

Abbeyleix made a blistering start to the second half with a point from Ryan Brennan followed by a trio of scores from Cormac Byrne, two from frees and another from play after a driving run up the field by Stephen O'Donnell. Phelan settled Castletown once again with a free from range and he followed it up with a goal after Kyron Cuddy made a darting run and evaded another rash attempt at a trip from an Abbeyleix back before playing a brilliant ball inside to his clubmate to rattle home from close range.

The sides traded from placed balls with Byrne slotting two to Phelan's one, but Cuddy was starting to find space and heat up as he slotted two excellent points in succession after excellent touches to take control of the ball and he made it three outrageous scores in five minutes after a reply from Cathal Noone at the other end.

Still just three points separated the teams down the final stretch and Odhran Cuddy was forced into action to make a good save on an Eli Quinn free and his full-back Ryan Peters was called into action to do the same for a Cormac Byrne effort just seconds later.

Castletown survived a few late scares with some excellent work at the back from Ryan Peters, Ciaran Lyons, Oran McKelvey and Dan Whelan to get the ball free, eventually resulting in a free for Phelan from midfield, which he gleefully struck between the sticks as Lalor blew the final whistle.
