CCTV anti-dumping cameras to return to Laois bottle bring banks

Fines ahead for dumping at bottle banks in Portlaoise and Mountmellick
Bottle Bank dumpers beware in Laois, the cameras are coming back.
For five years, there had been no CCTV cameras permitted at dumping blackspots due to legal GDPR privacy issues.
However with new laws now in place, bring banks in Portlaoise and Mountmellick are planned to be watched again by the cameras.
Anyone leaving unwanted items on the ground next to a bottle bank, even if it was left because the bank was full up, will be liable for a litter fine.
Laois County Council has given notice of a public consultation period, to install CCTV cameras at its recycling centres in Portlaoise and Mountmellick.
It is also notifying a public consultation period ahead of putting anti-dumping cameras in Vicarstown and in Clonenagh / Trumera.
The council says the sole use of the CCTV cameras will be to prevent litter and illegal dumping, and to enforce the Litter Pollution Act and Waste Management Act.
Submissions can be made to Laois County Council until May 18, with the heading "public consultation on CCTV cameras".
Last summer the council installed its first cameras since they were removed in 2020, after public consultation, in Killenard and Graiguecullen, and the general areas of Clonkeen / Trumra and Vicarstown.
New guidelines for anti-litter CCTV cameras require that each site must have a GDPR risk assessment and be approved by the Data Protection Commissioner
