Ratheniska Community Hall has been put forward for a new childcare facility in the area

A local community hall in Laois has sought planning permission to establish a new childcare facility.

The Ratheniska Community Hall committee have submitted a planning application to Laois County Council to change the use of part of the community hall to a childcare facility.

The community hall, which is located beside the Church of the Holy Cross in Ratheniska, is proposed to have two activity rooms to serve the childcare facility.

The planning application also includes plans for a new exit door to the rear of the building, minor internal alterations and all other associated site works.

The proposed development would share the use of the existing hall, kitchen and sanitary facilities.

The building would also continue to serve as a community hall outside the operating hours of the childcare facility.

The building is owned by the Kildare & Leighlin Diocesan Trust who have given the community hall committee the go-ahead for the new facility.

The Ratheniska Community Hall operates as a non-profit and community-run facility in the village.

The hall's facilities are maintained and managed by local volunteers.

The committee stated in their application that the hall "serves as an important hub for community activities, social engagement and childcare provision."

Laois County Council are due to make their decision on the planning application for the new childcare facility by June 7, 2026.
