Laois County Council will advertise its intention to take three estates in charge in the coming weeks.

Director of Service Simon Walton announced the council’s intention at a recent meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

Cllr Willie Aird had tabled a motion asking: “That the Portlaoise Municipal District be given an update on the taking in charge of the Garden Village, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise”

In a written response, Evelyn Brownrigg  at the council’s planning department stated that: “This estate will be advertised for Taking in Charge late November/early December 2022.”

Cllr Aird said the issue had arisen several times and has been very frustrating. “It was a very, very difficult one. This was the oldest one that I think we had on our books,” he remarked.

Cllr Aird said if it was advertised in the coming weeks it should be taken in charge by February.

Supporting the motion, Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley noted the difficulties in having the estate taken in charge. “It is quite an achievement. I will be delighted when it is taken in charge,” she said.

Director of Services Simon Walton said the estate was previously advertised to be taken in charge but didn’t because of legal issues.

He said three estates in Portlaoise, Garden Village, Bellingham and Ashewood Walk will all be advertised to be taken in charge.
