A man appeared in court accused of having an unlicensed crossbow.

Aivaras Gruodis, 32, with an address at 15 Clonroosk Abbey, Portlaoise is charged under the firearms act with having a functioning crossbow at his address on June 12 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said a crossbow was discovered when Laois Drugs Unit executed a search at the house.

He said Gardai asked the defendant if he had a licence for the weapon and the defendant confirmed he did not have one.

“It wasn’t produced as a weapon per se?” asked Judge Andrew Cody.

Judge Cody was told the crossbow was not produced as a weapon and merely found during the search.

He adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on November 11.
