The alleged crime boss was extradited from Dubai

Alleged organised crime boss Daniel Kinahan spent his first night in Portlaoise Prison on Sunday, August 9.

Kinahan(49) was flown to Ireland from the United Arab Emirates on an Irish Government jet and immediately taken by Garda escort to the non-jury Special Criminal Court in Dublin, where he was charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation.

He told the three-judge court that he did not have time to arrange legal representation. When informed about his right to apply for bail he said: “I understand. I think we know I won’t be getting bail, but thank you.”

Following the short hearing he was taken in a heavily armed convoy to Portlaoise Prison where he will await trial. A helicopter hovered overhead as he was brought into the prison.

It’s reported that he will be kept in isolation at the high security prison and he will have access to his own gym equipment and a library.
