Displaced Ukrainians in Laois nearing 1,000 point

The number of Ukrainian war refugees welcomed to Laois has almost reached 1,000.

Latest figures from Laois County Council have confirmed that 922 people from Ukraine are now living in the county, with most of them in private accommodation offered to help them.

"Approximately 250 of these are in accommodation centres such as hotels, guesthouses, hostels and refurbished properties, with the remainder in privately sourced or pledged accommodation," the council CEO states in their April report.

CEO John Mulholland also gave an update on the rapid build 43 houses that are going up in Rathdowney, paid by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, and built by the OPW.

"Work is progressing on site, with a view to having them available by June," he said.

After three years, the houses revert to the responsibility of Laois County Council who can decide if they wish to place their tenants in them.
