A man replied ‘I don’t know’ when asked why he didn’t have car insurance.

Andrius Deguckas, 36, of Apartment 7, 23 White Horse Lodge, Portlaoise Road, Laois was stopped on Patrick Street in Mountrath on July 29 last.

Garda Stephen O’Hanlon said the defendant was driving a black Ford Galaxy on the date in question which was seized as there was no insurance or NCT.

“He tried to say that €150 was missing from his person,” said Garda O’Hanlon.

The defendant, who didn’t have a solicitor, was asked if he had insurance. When he said no, Judge Andrew Cody asked why not?

“I don’t know,” the man replied.

The defendant apologised and also admitted not having a licence.

Judge Cody disqualified him from driving for two years and fined him €500 for not having insurance, €300 for not having a licence and €250 for not having a valid NCT.
